Recently I have had many friends ask me what I think of the new “A.I. Art.”
The innovations of diffusion-based image generation technology implemented in platforms like Stable Diffusion and Midjourney represent much more than a gradual advancement of existing tools. After experimenting with them I have been struggling to comprehend the potential risks and rewards these kinds of technologies represent.
I vacillate between marveling at what a significant technological accomplishment they represent and simultaneously wishing that they did not exist. The future rarely asks for our consent, and historically, art is a reaction to the environmental forces and factors we find ourselves in. Whether we like it or not, I believe we are experiencing the opening credits of a new epoch of art and artifice that will affect many facets of our life moving forward.
When my barn studio burnt down in 2023, I watched helplessly as the body of work that I spent my life building was reduced to a towering inferno of smoke and ash. Prior to the fire, my talented team and I had already begun the process of taking many of my existing artworks and training an AI model based on my works.
I want to share a few of the first successful experiments that I have created in collaboration with this new creative feedback loop. We have a lot of different ideas on how we can use this new tool, Chimera AI, to support our artist friends, expand everyone's inspiration and creativity, and do it in a way that supports those who have devoted so much of their energy to bringing beauty to all of us.
